EL PASO, Texas—Del Sol Medical Center today announced the opening of its new biplane suite. The suite includes the addition of a biplane X-ray system, which uses two x-ray tubes simultaneously, allowing physicians to better visualize vessels in patients while reducing the amount of contrast material and radiation introduced to the patient. With this addition, Del Sol Medical Center physicians can now perform more complex cases in stroke and neurology patients.

The biplane suite, which allows for efficiency and precision during high-risk situations, will primarily be used for neurology and stroke treatment, but its technical capabilities can be applied in other cases, such as interventional radiology and cardiac catheterization patients. Bratislav Velimirovic, M.D., a neurosurgeon who practices at Del Sol Medical Center, completed the first patient case with this technology in early November.

“Biplane imaging is the most advanced technology available to better treat our stroke and neuro patients, where every minute is critical,” John Garcia, vice president of neuro and cardiac services at Del Sol Medical Center, said. “When urgent procedures arise, this biplane suite enables our physicians to address our patients’ needs safer and more efficiently.”

According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for one in every 20 deaths.

“Del Sol Medical Center is committed to providing the best technology in El Paso to care for high-risk patients, including those who have suffered a stroke,” David Shimp, chief executive officer of Del Sol Medical Center, said. “The biplane suite positions Del Sol Medical Center to be a primary destination for stroke and neurology care in our region.”
