Las Palmas Medical Center Announces $63-Million Expansion

Las Palmas Medical Center recently announced the investment of $63 million to create a women’s services tower and add a helipad to allow for transfers from outlying communities. The project will include a 90,000-square-foot vertical expansion—three new stories above the hospital’s intensive care unit located across the street from the main hospital tower.

The newly constructed third floor will house a 35-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), which is an increase of 23 beds from the existing 12-bed NICU. This floor will also have eight ante- and postpartum rooms.

The new fourth floor will consist of two C-section suites; eight labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum rooms; and 17 ante- and postpartum rooms. This expansion will increase the unit by 12 beds for a total of 33 women’s services beds in the women’s tower. The fifth floor will create capacity for future growth.

Additionally, the hospital will add a helipad on the roof of the expanded tower for transfers of patients in need of a higher level of care for NICU and neurosurgery. Finally, Las Palmas Medical Center will construct a 3,000-square-foot central energy plant to support this growth.

The second phase of the project will include the renovation of some vacant areas, as well as some nursing units, in the main hospital tower.

Phase one of the project is scheduled for completion in 2018. Construction is expected to begin late this year. Phase two will follow.
